Arts and Culture


In Botetourt our arts and heritage are celebrated.  Throughout the countyLive Music on the Wine Trail of Botetourt visitors can explore our performing arts, contemporary artists, live music and local culture. Enjoy a play at the new Geraldine Lawson Performing Arts Center or take in a show at the historic Buchanan Theatre.  Visit artisans at their workshops and watch them produce their crafts.

Attic Productions

Attic Productions is the community theater in Botetourt County.  They offer opportunities in the performing arts for children and adults to learn by doing. Founded in 1995, the all-volunteer group produces five plays per year. This local performing arts company is housed in the new Geraldine Lawson Performing Arts Center located just outside of Fincastle.

Buchanan Theatre

Placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior, the Buchanan Theatre has been recognized as Botetourt County's oldest standing theatre. The theatre plays host to exciting musical groups, film festivals and movie showings throughout the year.

Artists and Galleries


Botetourt is home to many artists and their shops.  Main Street in Buchanan has many opportunities to meet the artist and view their work in their shops. Local artists such as renowned photographer Jimmy Carter have been featured in regional and national art exhibits. Join us for our annual event  Open Studios- Botetourt, where artist's in the county open their studios for tours, education and sales on the last weekend in October.

Caldwell Mountain Copper Kettles

Copper Vessels are made in the form of buckets, kettles, bowls, trays, etc.  They are fashioned from flat sheets of copper using flat seams of dovetailing, hammering, and welding with silver.  After cleaning, they are hand-polished.

The Appalachian Craftsman

Authentic traditional Appalachian mountain craftwork from wood and copper, and programs on mountain heritage and culture, by a local native craftsman.

Old Trinity School Quilt Shop

This unique shop has reproduction fabrics from the 1780's until 1940's. They offer many classes, demo's, personal help and an annual retreat.

Live Music


Live music can be seen and heard throughout the county year round.  The Buchanan Art Series has hosted concerts featuring the following performers over the past two years; Opera Roanoke, Rhythm Road, Barbara Martin, Wonder, Acoustic Endeavors, War Pipe,


Virginia Gentlemen, Celtabillies, Oriskany Strings, Craig County Boys, Shadowland Band, New Corner Grocery, Haymakertown Express, Upland Express, One Hundred Proof, Virginia Carolina Band, Stacey Hobbs, Honeycutt & Baker and David Austin, Keith Woods & Friends. This past year they hosted a concert featuring Jane Powell.


The local band Oriskany Strings hails from the little mountain village of Oriskany, in Botetourt County. The band was formed in 1997 to perform and promote old-time country and bluegrass music and have found national acclaim.


The annual Sounds of the Mountains Festival brings visitors in from all directions to hear live music and storytelling in the peaceful setting of Camp Bethel.


One of the local favorite hang outs, 3 Lil' Pigs features live music on select weekends and on the deck in the warmer months. The Mountain Magic in the Fall festival features several blue grass bands on the main stage in Banjo Pickin at Mountain Magicdowntown Buchanan. Fincastle lays claim to hosting the first ever bluegrass festival, known as the "Woodstock of Bluegrass" back in 1965.  The tradition of fine Bluegrass is still alive in Botetourt with events throughout the year. And don't miss the Wine Trail of Botetourt concert series. All summer long concert one of the wineries hosts a concert at their vineyard.
